“Throughout the Grid Project, I constructed a number of floor and wall works using a variety of readily available domestic materials such as cleaning sponges and paper towels. The sponge based works below are a result of my process-based investigation into the nature of the sponge and how it can be transformed through various processes and treatments using acrylic, ink and enamel paints. I enjoyed working with the fluidity of these mediums and finding elements of nature reflected in the final work. In reviewing this body of work, I realised that an unlikely material such as a simple domestic cleaning sponge could transcend its state, deviating from the purpose in which it was seemingly pre-destined.” This project opened my eyes to the physical and spiritual possibilities of materiality and was the beginning of my journey into materiality.
