GOLD RUSH

Gold symbolises wealth and luxury,

unlike toilet paper which is generally void of

social or economic status.

My gold toilet paper works came about through experimentation with various everyday domestic materials. One of my first creations was a single roll of toilet paper painted gold, mounted precariously on skewers. It took on a form which resembled a person running. It reminded me of COVID times when toilet paper was scarce, in fact, toilet paper during these times was like gold. Due to scarcity of this basic functional item, society witnessed the scuffles in the supermarket through the news, and everyone seemed to have their own toilet paper story to share.

Here, toilet paper and other domestic materials have been elevated to objects which are beyond their intended use or natural state. They prompt us to consider the shifting nature of wealth and status, giving us pause to consider where the real gold in life resides.
